The Split Section plugin was built before Fluid Engine was available in Squarespace. Fluid Engine makes it easy to create basic side-by-side content on your website. However, there are still many other use-cases for this plugin, like sticky split sections and split List & Gallery sections. Be sure to check out the demo page for some examples of how this plugin can be used.
